All Vision Examinations ARE NOT
alike!
Optometrists and
ophthalmologists often refer to eye examinations as
"comprehensive vision evaluations". These
examinations are focused on checking to insure that the eyes are
healthy and that they can see 20/20.
20/20 eyesight refers only to the fact
that the child can see from 20 feet away the size letter that
they should be able to see from that distance. It does not
tell us how well that child is seeing at closer distances -
such as typical reading and desk work distances. For this, a
Developmental Vision
Evaluation is what is needed.
A Developmental Vision
Evaluation performs supplemental testing
in addition to that typically conducted
during comprehensive vision evaluations performed at
the family optometrists or ophthalmologists office. Tests of
near focusing skills, two-eyed teaming and coordination at near, and
visual tracking skills are but a few of the skills that
are tested during a Developmental Vision Evaluation.
A Developmental Optometrist
is an eye doctor who specializes
in diagnosing and treating vision problems that interfere with a
child's ability to read and learn.
In order to
determine if you or your child has a vision problem interefering
with reading and learning, you need to see a Developmental
Optometrist. To find a developmental
